For more than 30 years, Eco Choice Aotearoa has certified products and services that are better for the planet, socially responsible and safe for New Zealanders.

We are the only environmental label in the country that takes a rigorous, life cycle approach guided by ISO 14024 to offer independent certification. Our ecolabel is earned by meeting science-backed criteria outlined in our published product and service standards.  

ECA is a not-for-profit, governed by an independent Board of Directors and trademarked by the Ministry for the Environment.

Why We Are Forming a Technical Advisory Panel 

When drafting our product and service standards, we consider international best practice, while taking into account New Zealand’s unique market realities and regulatory environment. ECA is establishing a Technical Advisory Panel to provide crucial insights and technical feedback on the development and revision of these standards.

Members of the panel will also be consulted by our Head of Standards, Dr Andrea Edwards, about any industry, market, or policy factors that could impact the viability or implementation of criteria within the standards.

We welcome expressions of interest from industry professionals and academics with expertise environmental or social sustainability, particularly in:

- Circular Economy 
- ISO Standards (14024)
- Lifecycle Analysis (LCA)
- Modern Slavery 
- Repairability
- Sustainable Procurement 
- Digital Product Passports 
- Carbon/Greenhouse Gases and Energy 

Terms of Eligibility and Engagement

These are the terms of Eligibility and Engagement for the Eco Choice Aotearoa Technical Advisory Panel.

Terms of Eligibility:

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Relevant technical expertise- a deep knowledge and understanding of a specific area (example: paints) that are relevant to the panel’s purpose including, best practices, current trends and emerging technologies.
  
  
• Relevant industry experience (5 years minimum)- proven experience working in the industry including, research and development, implementation and market trends.
  
  
• Willingness to share technical trends and innovations in industry.
• Commitment to actively participating in reviewing and commenting on draft standards.
  
  
• Willingness to adhere to the TAP code of conduct.
  
  
• Commitment to ECA’s objectives to provide product standards the adhere to ISO 14024 with criteria that allow for the most environmental responsible options possible.

Expectation of Members:

Applications who are successful in being appointed as a member of the technical advisory panel are expected to do the following:

• Attend Quarterly Meetings- Members are required to actively participate in meetings, having reviewed relevant materials beforehand and being prepared to contribute meaningfully. Notify the Head of Standards in advance if unable to attend.
  
  
• Actively review and offer feedback to draft standards in a timely manner- Members asked to review standards are given one month to review the draft standard and offer any relevant feedback.
  
  
• Engage in Constructive Dialogue- Members required to express opinions and ideas respectfully, even when dissenting.  Listen attentively to others' perspectives and be open to considering alternative viewpoints. Avoid personal attacks, inflammatory or discriminatory language, or disruptive behaviour.
  
  
• Ability to work collaboratively- Members must be willing to work collaboratively to create a consensus around the best, environmentally responsible options for criteria in the product standards.
  
  
• Declare Conflict of Interest- Members are required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise, that may impact their ability to provide impartial advice. This includes relationships with organizations or individuals involved in the matters under review. The Head of Standards will determine the appropriate course of action, which may include recusal from specific discussions.
  
  
• Maintain Confidentiality: Protect confidential information shared during TAP meetings or through other communication channels. Do not disclose such information to unauthorized individuals or organizations. This obligation extends beyond the duration of membership on the TAP.

Please note that this is a voluntary role. However, candidates will be allowed to list this role under their CV.
