GENERAL EMERGENCY INFO

In the event of any emergency, or natural disaster, the following will happen:

  • Prevention of harm to all persons on site.
  • Raise the alarm.
  • Contact Emergency Services on 111 (as required).
  • Do not put yourself or anyone else at any unnecessary risk!
  • Evacuate from the building or area.
  • Assemble all personnel in the designated area.
  • Check all persons are accounted for.

EVENT HAZARDS

 

ATVs and Motorcycles

ATVs and Motorcycles use creates a risk of injury or death as a result of rider error or mechanical failure.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

 

  • Ensure Vehicles are regularly serviced
  • Check tyres, brakes and steering are operational before use
  • Ride responsibly
  • Identify no go zones
  • Suggested speed limits 5-10 km/hr
  • No carrying of passengers
  • No heavy or uneven loads
  • Always wear protective equipment, including helmets, covered shoes, hi-vis
  • No operators under 16 years of age
  • Follow module instructions
  • Listen to the Staff instructions.

Chainsaws

Amputation or loss of life from serious chainsaw wound or tree falling and crushing contestant or spectator.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Chainsaws are noisy and can cause hearing loss, always wear ear protection
  • Ensure the chainsaw is well maintained and the chain brake is functioning
  • Sawdust and sticks flying can cause eye injuries. A face guard or good pair of safety glasses is a must
  • Your biggest risk is the chain itself and the item you are cutting - they both have the potential to kill
  • Keep your chain sharp and follow your training and instructions
  • Always wear appropriate PPE, as provided


Chemicals including fuels

The use of chemicals and fuels poses risks to users from burns, poisoning and toxic fumes.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Protective clothing and equipment must be available and worn if required
  • Always check the material safety data sheet and keep a copy near the chemical storage area (may be found online for this worksite in this document)
  • Chemicals must be properly stored/labelled as per regulatory requirements
  • Always warn others who may be affected by your spraying

Fire

Fires present serious risks associated with property damage, burns and smoke inhalation.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Be familiar with the emergency procedures of this event
  • Make sure that electrical equipment (especially space heaters) is not dangerously close to combustible items
  • Be aware of the location of fire extinguishers and emergency equipment
  • Make sure that fire doors or escape routes don't become blocked by equipment, furniture or boxes
  • Follow and obey the instructions of onsite fire wardens at all times


Hand & Power Tools

Hand and power tools are associated with hearing loss, electric shock, eye injury, cuts, open wounds and long-term lung conditions.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

 

  • Use the correct tool for the job and follow the manufacturer's recommendations
  • Never remove the guards from power tools
  • Wear a dust mask and safety glasses whenever cutting or sanding
  • Hearing protection is a must for any operation that requires you to raise your voice to be heard
  • Stay within the module perimeter for separation of contestants and crowd
  • Listen to the judges
  • All PPE must be fit for purpose, in working order and used correctly
  • Contestants will be penalised for unsafe behaviour and stopped immediately if in danger


Heavy Machinery

Heavy machinery use creates the risk of injury or death as a result of operator error or mechanical failure.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Follow module instructions
  • Stay within the module perimeter for separation of contestants and crowd
  • Listen to the judges. Contestants will be penalised for unsafe behaviour and stopped immediately if in danger


Insects and Wildlife

Being outdoors has exposure to insects and wildlife that can Bite, Sting and Irritate, severe risks to those with insect allergies.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Allergies are noted to NZ Young Farmers and any treatments are carried with you on the day
  • Appropriate clothing is to be worn at all times
  • Caution around insect and wildlife prone habitats
  • Communicate with staff before interacting with insects and wildlife


Livestock

Livestock poses the risk of crushing, bruising, open wounds, and disease.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Fencing and barricades will separate all unnecessary personnel from hazards.
  • Necessary personnel will use caution and PPE.


Manual Handling & Lifting

Risk of sprains, strains, fractures, crushing or amputation.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Use a safe lifting technique
  • Split loads, bend knees, keep back straight, warm up
  • Always use engineered solutions, if provided

Noise

Noise is a major hazard within the construction industry. Repetitive, excessive noise causes long term hearing problems and can be a dangerous distraction, the cause of accidents.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Ensure correct PPE is worn


Pumps

Pumps produce high-pressure water which creates the risk of bruising and open wounds.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Stay within the module perimeter for separation of contestants and crowd
  • Listen to the judges
  • All PPE must be worn correctly
  • Contestants will be penalised for unsafe behaviour and stopped immediately if in danger


Sleep Fatigue or Substance Impairment

Risk of injury or accident due to impairment.

 

These rules must be followed:

  • If you are overly fatigued, under the influence of strong medicines or illegal drugs you're not fit to compete in any stage of the contest.
  • Ask for help to find transport.
  • Keep an eye on other competitors and have the courage to say something if you don't think they're fit to compete for your safety and theirs
  • This event has zero tolerance for alcohol or drugs


Slips, Trips & Falls

Slips/trips/falls causing fractures, lacerations, sprains and strains

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Keep trip hazards clear
  • No boxes or power cords across access ways
  • Be aware of hazards
  • Clean-up / keep area tidy
  • Take care when walking in slippery unstable terrain
  • Use PPE as provided


Weather

Harms such as sunburn, windburn, frostbite, hypothermia, dehydration, sunstroke, and skin cancer are all associated with weather.

 

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Always plan by checking the weather forecast and preparing for the worst
  • Cover up if you're going out in the sun and use SPF 30+ sunscreen
  • Plan alternative work to do when the weather packs in
  • If bad weather makes a work site dangerous, stop work immediately
  • Beware, wet ground conditions often lead to vehicle accidents
  • You're more productive when you're warm and dry so if you do venture out in cold wet weather ensure you're in good gear
  • Please wear PPE, if provided
  • Make sure all signs, tents, tables, umbrellas and marquees are secured for windy conditions

Wire & Sharp Items

The use of wire and sharp items poses a risk of open wounds, puncturing skin, eye harm open wounds and serious blood loss as a result of incorrect usage.


The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Follow module instructions
  • Stay within the module perimeter for separation of contestants and crowd
  • Listen to the judges. Contestants will be penalised for unsafe behaviour and stopped immediately if in danger
