The Story and Structure
Reading the Bible by Genre

Sundays, September 14, 21, & 28
9:45 a.m.
Redeemer Church | ES3

The Bible is not a single style of writing but a diverse collection of genres—narrative, law, poetry, wisdom, prophecy, epistle, and apocalyptic—each shaping how we interpret and apply God’s Word. In this 3-week equipping class, we’ll explore how genre impacts meaning and how we can read the Bible faithfully in light of its literary design.
We’ll begin with a survey of the major genres of Scripture, then spend two weeks focused on apocalyptic literature, one of the most often misunderstood. We’ll learn how to engage these symbolic and hope-filled books with wisdom, humility, and gospel clarity.
Class Schedule:
  • Week 1 – Reading the Bible by Genre: A survey of the Bible’s primary literary genres and how they shape interpretation.
  • Week 2 – Apocalyptic Literature: What It Is and Why It Matters: An introduction to apocalyptic themes, structure, and symbolism through Daniel and Revelation.
  • Week 3 – Apocalyptic Literature Part 2: Reading Revelation: A practical guide to faithfully engaging Revelation—what to watch for, what to avoid, and how to see Christ at the center.
