Volunteer as a Tutor!

Thank you for your interest in tutoring with Student U! Volunteer tutors are an essential part of our community as we support students during the school year.

Student U Tutoring takes place at afterschool at the WG Pearson Center (600 E Umstead St). Middle School Tutoring takes place daily, and High School Tutoring is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We also connect students with virtual tutoring as-needed. Our volunteers make a commitment to tutor at least once a week for a semester, usually for 1-2 hours per session.

OTHER TUTORING NEEDS

Sometimes our students have tutoring needs that fall outside of our regular tutoring hours. Please indicate if you are interested in the following, and we will reach out if a need arises.

Virtual tutoring (via Zoom) on weekday evenings.

In-person tutoring outside of standard program hours.

I am only interested in in-person tutoring during the hours listed above.

TRAINING
All first-time Student U tutors must complete our Tutor Training before working with students. Please indicate which training option your prefer for January 2025:*

In-person Option: Tuesday, January 7, 5:30pm-7:00pm (at WG Pearson Center)

Virtual Option: Friday, January 10, 9:00am-10:30am (on Zoom)

I cannot make any of these times and will need to complete a recording/review of the training.

**For Fidelity Investments Tutors only: Wednesday, January 15, 2:00-3:00 (virtual)

**For students of Dr. Miller only: I'll participate in training during class.

Are there any specific courses or skills in which you feel most confident tutoring (chemistry, Spanish, APUSH, general essay writing, etc)?

Please also indicate here if you are interested in supporting with any of the following:
-Standardized Test prep (ACT, SAT, EOGs, etc)
-College essay/personal statement writing

The main role our tutors play is supporting individual students to complete homework and review subject-specific content. Sometimes tutors also jump in to fulfill other roles/needs of our programming while they're here. In the past, tutors have helped with the following:

1. Running a check-in/snack table
2. Helping students build executive function skills/habits (making to-do lists, staying organized, project planning, emailing teachers)
3. Acting as a floating tutor for students completing homework independently
4. Supporting students who have finished their homework with an enrichment activity

If you prefer NOT to take on any of the above of these tasks, please list them here so we can take note.

Our tutoring takes place on the third floor of our building. Will you need any accommodations such as elevator use, ramp access, handicap parking, or other?
