Table Top Exchange: Advanced Ground-Based Autonomous Equipment/Vehicles, Used for Wildfire Response in Hazardous Conditions
 

Our objective is to leverage our expertise in advanced technologies and innovation to assess and develop capabilities identified through a comprehensive technology scan and subsequent prize challenge. This project aims to enhance firefighting functions by rapidly evaluating and deploying advanced remotely operated equipment, ground-based autonomous vehicles, and other remote-operated technologies (excluding aircraft) for use in wildfire response, particularly in hazardous conditions. The goal is to collaborate with industry and academic partners to advance these technologies toward a fully functional fire line solution.

Wildland fire response on and near military lands is becoming increasingly complex due to hazardous fuel conditions and a warming climate. Remotely automated equipment, developed through various DoD-funded and private sector innovations, has proven useful in wildfire response. However, accessing and rapidly assessing these private and academic investments is critical to improving firefighting functions in these hazardous conditions.

Table Top Exchange Objectives:
  • Assess the capabilities of remotely operated equipment and ground-based autonomous vehicles.
  • Organize and facilitate a tabletop exchange with industry, academia, and government participation as part of the market analysis.
  • Refine the problem definition based on market analysis and tabletop exchange, and prioritize goals and desired outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the government sponsor to analyze the results and determine the optimal solution capabilities for the prize challenge demonstration, solution day event, and/or other merit-based competition events.
 Outcomes:
  • A comprehensive report outlining state-of-the-art technologies and potential solution providers to invite to participate in the prize challenge to include:
    • A refined problem statement based on prioritized goals and desired outcomes.
    • Recommendations for characteristics of the optimal demonstration solution.
