Fix the Corridor of Death in Somerville! We demand that MassDOT prioritize people before steel.

Three of our neighbors have been killed by motorists on McGrath Highway and Mystic Avenue in under two years. These MassDOT-controlled roads divide Somerville's lowest-income environmental justice communities. It is unacceptable that MassDOT is proposing to delay critical safety improvements on these streets until summer 2023 in favor of upgrades to I-93 that will further burden our neighborhood with diverted highway traffic. As outlined in our detailed letter, we demand that MassDOT:

  • Immediately put in place quick-build life-saving safety measures at key locations on Mystic Avenue and McGrath Highway
  • Uphold its promise to construct safety and ADA compliance improvements on Rte 28/38 by the end of 2022
  • Meet with the public to present the proposed designs for Rte 28/38
  • Include sound barriers in the upcoming I-93 viaduct project
