HSDFF X Portrait 2023
FAQ + Contact Us Page

What is Portrait?

Portrait helps established filmmakers and industry professionals forge relationships across festivals, memberships, organizations, and projects.

The Portrait app makes it easy to swap portfolios, save contacts, and see what’s happening across the industry, including festivals, premieres, grants, deadlines, and opportunities.

How does it work? How do I get on Portrait? If I’m not able to attend HSDFF, how can I use Portrait?

As an HSDFF filmmaker or industry guest, you will receive a personalized email to download the Portrait app and activate your account. Portrait is available under "Portrait Creative Network" on Apple and Android. You will need your personalized invitation to activate your account and sign in the first time.

When you sign in the first time, you’ll see a draft portfolio of your recent projects. Your portfolio is then yours to edit, add to, and share as you see fit. Your portfolio’s QR code makes it easy to share on the ground at HSDFF!

If you aren’t able to join us in Arkansas, there’s still so much to explore.

On the Portrait Discover Tab (search icon), you’ll find:

  • The HSDFF Festival Experience, with featured films, attendees, group chat, and events
  • Other Festival Experiences - you can use Portrait across the festival circuit
  • Grants, opportunities, deadlines, and featured work

If you have any login issues or questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to Sarah@onportrait.com.

Tell me more about the Portrait House Lounge at HSDFF.

The Portrait House Lounge is located at the Festival’s Hub – the landmark Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa in downtown Hot Springs. Don’t miss the Filmmaker Mixer at the Lounge on Sunday from 6-7:30 pm!

The lounge will be open daily from Sunday, Oct. 8th through Tuesday Oct. 10th. This is a place to meet with other filmmakers and industry or just take a breather. We think this will be a useful community space for creatives, especially those here for the inaugural Filmmaker Forum on Oct. 9th and 10th.

What has Portrait’s festival presence looked like?

We’ve hosted Portrait House all along the festival circuit. This year, we’ve hosted Portrait House during Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, and TIFF. We launched our app at Tribeca in June, and just launched the mobile festival experience at TIFF. We’re excited to keep building for you!

If you would like to discuss how Portrait can support your festival, please email jenny@onportrait.com

If you have ideas for how we can make the festival experience on the app awesome, share your thoughts here – or email jean@onportrait.com.

How do I get my film featured on Portrait?

Your HSDFF film will be featured in the HSDFF festival experience and in the Portrait app. We love featuring filmmaker work – whether it’s at a festival or not. Have an upcoming premiere or news to share? Post it on Portrait – or reach out to us if it’s still under wraps.

Can any filmmaker join Portrait?

All HSDFF filmmakers with a film at the festival and industry panelists are invited to Portrait.

Portrait is currently invite-only. We welcome established filmmakers and industry professionals who’ve had a project at a major festival, on a major media platform, or in theaters. Our core community currently includes directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, writers, composers, production company leaders, distributors, programmers and other industry professionals. We will be carefully expanding the Portrait community to ensure it stays useful and to invite groups of creative professionals at the right time, when the platform is likely to be most useful to them.

How is Portrait different from LinkedIn or IMDB?

LinkedIn was built for resumes and careers that move from company to company. IMDB was built primarily as a database and reference guide as opposed to a living networking tool. We think there’s a better way.

How is Portrait different from industry memberships?

Portrait’s goal is to build technology that underpins and supports people and organizations across the creative ecosystem – making it easier for people to find each other and for festivals and memberships to reach filmmakers.

We love partnering with industry organizations. We’ve worked with The DPA, The DCA, The Film Collaborative, The Gotham, Brown Girls Doc Mafia, Dear Producer, Film Fatales and others.

Want to discuss how Portrait can support your organization’s goals? Let’s talk! Please email Jenny@onportrait.com.
